Sakai is Durham Tech’s new system for accessing course materials online. Sakai is similar in many ways to Blackboard but offers an updated interface and many new tools. Sakai will replace Blackboard at Durham Tech by December 2013. Until then, as we phase in Sakai, some of your courses may be on Sakai and some may be on Blackboard so for a while you’ll be logging into both systems to access your course materials. Check with your instructor if you are unsure which system he/she is using.

What is Sakai?

Sakai is a system for accessing course materials online. Instructors use Sakai in a variety of ways – for example, to provide course information, handouts, assignments, tests, grades, or online discussions.

What computer hardware and software do I need to use Sakai?

To access a course on Sakai you need:

  • a computer (PC or Mac) with high-speed Internet access
  • an email address
    • Note: Credit students must use their ConnectMail email account (provided by Durham Tech)
  • a reasonably current web browser (Firefox or Chrome are recommended) - Download Firefox | Download Chrome
  • JavaScript and cookies enabled (How to enable javascript)

How do I log in to Sakai?

Credit students

To log in to Sakai, you will use the SAME user id and password you use for Self-Service!

User name format: last name + first initial + last 4 digits of your Durham Tech ID number (Example: doej1234)

  • If your last name is long, your user name contains only the first 15 characters
  • User names do not contain spaces, hyphens, or other special characters

Your password is the same one you use to access Self-Service, ConnectMail, and other college systems.

Non-credit students

The first time you use Durham Tech’s Sakai system, you must set up your password. For complete instructions, see this handout:

What if I forget my password?

IMPORTANT: Changing your Sakai password automatically changes your Self-Service and ConnectMail passwords too.
