==Student Video for Test & Quizzes==
==How do I avoid the dreaded "Blackboard-ate-my-test" syndrome?==

It's sad but true: technical problems do happen, and sometimes they happen while students are taking online tests. The result can be losing information or getting "locked out" of a test before completing it.

Luckily, there are things you can do to minimize your chances of encountering technical problems. <!-- If you follow the tips below, then the only problem with your online test should be deciding which answer to choose! -->

# In the course site, locate and '''click on the test (or quiz) link'''. The location of this link depends on how your instructor has organized things. If the main course menu contains a Tests & Quizzes area, look there. If not, the test link may be in the Lessons area. If you have trouble finding the test link, ask your instructor.
+
# Once you have located and clicked on the test link, you'll see information about the test, such as the due date, whether or not there is a time limit, etc. Your instructor may have also included special instructions. Be sure you understand how much time you have to submit the test.
+
# Click '''Begin Assessment''' to take the assessment, or Cancel if you want to wait and take it later.
+
# How you proceed through the questions will depend on how the instructor has set up the assessment. If the assessment has more than one page, click '''Next''' to save the current page and advance to the next one. If you have the option to do so, you can click '''Previous''' or use the '''Table of Contents''' button to return to earlier questions.
+
# When you're ready to submit the assessment, click '''Submit for Grading''' on the last page of the assessment, and then click Submit for Grading again to confirm your submission. You'll receive a confirmation number, which you should keep.

* Be careful when using the <Backspace> key to correct errors in text boxes. (In some cases, pressing the <Backspace> key is the same as clicking your browser's back button.) Be sure that your cursor is inside the text entry box before pressing <Backspace>.
+
==How do I see feedback after submitting a test?==
+
Click on '''Tests & Quizzes''' on the main course menu. The lower half of the screen will list the tests you have already submitted. If your instructor has enabled feedback for a test, you will see a '''Feedback''' link beside the test. Click the '''Feedback''' link to see the details your instructor has made available.

* Depending on the settings your instructor chooses, students who attempt to view material on another web site or in another area of the Blackboard course may find themselves "locked out" and unable to return to complete the test.
+
==My test score looks low. What's going on?==
<!-- * Pay attention to the instructions in the gray box at the top of the test. The area labeled "Force Completion" will indicate if you can leave the test and resume it later or if you must complete it "now" (in one sitting, without leaving the test screen). -->
+
Test scores that display immediately after you submit a test do not include points for any '''Short Answer/Essay questions'''. If you take a test or quiz that contains Short Answer/Essay questions, the score you see immediately may seem low. When your instructor grades the Short Answer/Essay questions and awards points for them, your overall test score will be adjusted accordingly.

==I got bumped out of my test and can't get back in. What do I do?==

You must contact your instructor, who will need to "clear your attempt" so you can start the test again. When the instructor "clears your attempt", any and all of your previous answers will be erased.

==I keep getting locked out of tests right when I start them.==

If you have problems accessing a test or quiz, "double-clicking" may be the problem. When you click the link to begin a test, be sure to use a SINGLE mouse click. You should not double-click anywhere in Blackboard--especially when accessing a test!

==I clicked on the link to a test but nothing happened.==

Most likely, a pop-up blocker is preventing the test from opening. Try disabling your pop-up blocker, then click the test link again. (And remember to single-click the test link.)

==I see a pop-up warning after clicking the Submit button on my test. What do I do?==

When you finish your test and click SUBMIT, you may see a warning box like this:

Sometimes the warning appears even if you have answered all the questions! (This can happen if you use the SAVE button beside individual questions, which is not recommended. To avoid this problem, use the SAVE button at the bottom of the screen instead.)

'''If you see a warning that some questions may be incomplete, do this:'''

* Click CANCEL to make the warning box go away.

* Look over your test, and make sure you have answered all questions.

* Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click SAVE (beside the SUBMIT button).

* When you are sure you are done with the test, click SUBMIT.

Again, if you use the SAVE button at the bottom of the screen regularly, you can avoid this problem.

<!--If you are are sure that you completed all the test questions, ignore the warning "The following questions may be incomplete: Continue?" and click OK. Scroll down to the bottom of the test and click SAVE every 15 minutes or so as you are working on your test. But do not click SUBMIT until you are completely finished! -->

<!-- == I do not see the "timer" in the lower left corner when taking a timed test. ==

When taking a test with a time limit, a ticking "timer" or clock can appear in the lower left corner of your browser showing how much time you have left. If you do not see the timer, you may need to adjust your browser's settings:

'''Firefox'''

* Go into Tools -> Options -> Content -> Advanced and check the box ON for "Change status bar text", the timer will then appear.

'''Internet Explorer'''

* Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security tab -> Internet -> Custom Levels, scroll down (near the bottom) and enable "Allow status bar updates via script."

'''Note:''' You may need to restart your browser after you change its settings. -->

Student Video for Test & Quizzes

How can I avoid problems with online tests?

Topic Tips
Device/Browser Use a computer with the Firefox or Chrome browser.
 • Avoid using a mobile device for taking a test. Tests and quizzes work best on computers.
 • Firefox and Chrome are the recommended browsers for Sakai.
Time limit Be sure you understand how much time you have to take the test.
 • Information about the time limit is displayed when you click on a test link, just before you actually begin the test.
 • If your instructor has set a time limit, the test will submit automatically when the time limit is reached.
Navigation Never click your browser's Back button while taking a test or quiz!
 • Instead, always use the navigation buttons within the test to move to the Next question, to go to a Previous question (if allowed), to Save and to Submit.
Saving Save often!!
 • If the test displays one question per page, your answer will be saved automatically each time you click Next and move to the next question.
 • If the test displays multiple questions on the same page, scroll down to the bottom and click Save periodically to protect yourself from losing answers if a technical problem occurs.
 • If the test contains an essay question that takes time to answer, click Save periodically to save your work.
Browser tabs/windows Avoid opening new browser windows or tabs.
 • While it’s common to open new windows or tabs when browsing the web, refrain from doing so when taking a test. New tabs or windows can cause serious problems when opened while taking a Sakai test.
Beware the backspace Don't use the Backspace key unless your cursor is in a field where you can enter text.
 • Pressing Backspace under other circumstances may throw you out of the assessment and/or generate an error message.
Submit twice When you finish your test, be sure to click the SUBMIT button twice!
 • To get credit for taking a test or quiz, you must SUBMIT it when you are finished.
 • When you click the SUBMIT button, a screen will appear asking if you are sure you want to submit. Click SUBMIT again to submit the test.
Confirmation Save or print the confirmation message.
 • As soon as you submit a test or quiz, a confirmation screen appears that shows the name of the test, your name, a long confirmation number and the date you took the test.
 • Print or copy the confirmation screen and save it for your records.

What if I lose access while taking a test?

If you lose access while taking a test for any reason, and there is still time left to complete it, return to the course site and go back into the test. You should be able to pick up where you left off.

Timed tests: Be aware that the timer keeps running while you are out of the test, so try to return to the test as quickly as possible. The test will submit automatically when the time limit is reached, even if you are no longer in Sakai.

How do I start a test (or quiz) in Sakai?

View this video: How to take an online test on Sakai

Or follow these instructions:

 1. In the course site, locate and click on the test (or quiz) link. The location of this link depends on how your instructor has organized things. If the main course menu contains a Tests & Quizzes area, look there. If not, the test link may be in the Lessons area. If you have trouble finding the test link, ask your instructor.
 2. Once you have located and clicked on the test link, you'll see information about the test, such as the due date, whether or not there is a time limit, etc. Your instructor may have also included special instructions. Be sure you understand how much time you have to submit the test.
 3. Click Begin Assessment to take the assessment, or Cancel if you want to wait and take it later.
 4. How you proceed through the questions will depend on how the instructor has set up the assessment. If the assessment has more than one page, click Next to save the current page and advance to the next one. If you have the option to do so, you can click Previous or use the Table of Contents button to return to earlier questions.
 5. When you're ready to submit the assessment, click Submit for Grading on the last page of the assessment, and then click Submit for Grading again to confirm your submission. You'll receive a confirmation number, which you should keep.

How do I see feedback after submitting a test?

Click on Tests & Quizzes on the main course menu. The lower half of the screen will list the tests you have already submitted. If your instructor has enabled feedback for a test, you will see a Feedback link beside the test. Click the Feedback link to see the details your instructor has made available.

My test score looks low. What's going on?

Test scores that display immediately after you submit a test do not include points for any Short Answer/Essay questions. If you take a test or quiz that contains Short Answer/Essay questions, the score you see immediately may seem low. When your instructor grades the Short Answer/Essay questions and awards points for them, your overall test score will be adjusted accordingly.
