What can you do with Screencast-O-Matic?

Here's a short video introducing you to Screencast-O-Matic.

How do you set-up Screencast-O-Matic?

  • You'll need to install the software at home, or ask IT to install it at work.
  • To install the software (on Windows, I suggest you use Firefox or Chrome). Here's the instructions for installing the software on Windows 7 using Firefox:
    • Go to the Screencast-O-Matic home page: http://screencast-o-matic.com/home
    • Click on the "Start Recording" button
    • It will try to Launch the Recorder. If you have Java installed correctly and it is up-to-date, you could give permission to Java to run-but often it is not update-to-date or set up correctly. Instead, you can Download the launcher or Download the full app.
  1. To download the launcher:
    1. In the middle of the web page, click on the Download launcher link
    2. Click on the dialog box for InstallScreenRecorderLauncher, then click on the Save File button
    3. In the upper right area of your Firefox toolbar, click on the down-facing blue download button
    4. Click on the InstallScreenRecorderLauncher file, then click on the "Run" button
    5. You'll receive a pop-up letting you know the Screen Recorder is ready.
    6. In the middle of the web page, you'll see the message "Download Started!", below it, click on the "try again" link
    7. You'll see a pop-up window, click "OK"; you'll now see the recorder appear.

      • Under Frequently Asked Questions, under the first question "What if I can't get it to work in the browser?", click on the link to "Download the full app install"
      • You'll need to save the install file and after it downloads, click on the file and run it. Click Next, then Install. I suggest you click beside "Create Desktop Shortcut", then click Finish. Click on "FREE Recorder".
    • You're now ready to record your screen or use your webcam to create a video recording.
