Add Tools to your Sakai Courses (Site Info / Edit Tools)

Sakai has a lot of tools that you can add to and use in your courses! Your courses contain a set of default tools: Home, Announcements, Syllabus, Email, Email Archive, Resources, Schedule, Gradebook, Statistics, Site Info, and Help. If you’d like to try out some of the other Sakai tools, you must turn them on. Durham Tech Sakai Tool List

To see a list of Sakai tools and add them to your courses:

  1. Go to the Site Info tool and click on Edit Tools (one of the links at the top of the Site Info tool).
  2. Add tools by clicking on the check boxes beside the tool names.
  3. Click Save to see a summary of changes (in red) then click Finish to add the tools to your course menu.

More Info about Tools

Sign-up tool

The Sign-up tool provides students a way to sign up for events, such as office hours, class presentations, or meetings. Instructors can use the tool to create a set of time slots, then students can sign up for the one they want. Check out this blog post from Duke to learn more: http://tinyurl.com/sakai-signup

User Activity tool

The User Activity tool was custom-designed by our vendor (Longsight). Similar to Blackboard's "Performance Dashboard," it provides a quick look at students' activity in the course (when they first/last logged in, total time spent in the course site, etc). If you enable this tool, a User Activity button is added to your course menu, which you can hide from students if you want (under Site Info > Page Order). If you leave it visible to students, they can click it to see their own stats only. Once you have some student activity to view, you'll see that this is a great tool! Note: stats are updated only once per day at 9:15am each morning.
