Hybrid or Supplemental Sakai courses

If you are providing a hybrid course or a course that uses Sakai to provide supplemental course materials, the following tasks must be performed before students can participate in the course:

Required Instructor Sakai Training

  • Supervisors and instructors must register for and successfully complete the required workshop: Intro to Sakai – Online!
    • For hybrid and online courses, we highly recommend supervisors and instructors register for and complete the workshop: Intermediate Sakai – Online!
    • Note: Some supervisors require their hybrid and online instructors to register for and complete the Intermediate Sakai training.
  • You can find details about Sakai workshops at Sakai Training

Required Non-credit Sakai Course Request

  • Just like any other course, the appropriate personnel must add the class section in Colleague, and Sakai-trained instructors must be assigned to the Colleague section
  • After the Colleague section has been created, the supervisor or appropriate personnel must complete this form to request the non-credit Sakai Course creation (Non-credit Sakai courses are not created by default, like Credit courses are):
    • Sakai Course Site Request for Non-Credit Courses
    • A confirmation email will be sent to the requester. Within 1-2 days, the Sakai non-credit course will be created, and students automatically enrolled. If instructors have completed Sakai training, they will automatically be enrolled in the course site as well.

Required Sakai Hybrid/Supplemental Instructor Preparation

  • For face-to-face and hybrid classes, instructors must provide each student with the following required information:
    • Seven digit Durham Tech student id
    • Durham Tech/Sakai userid (made up of their last name, first initial of their first name and last four digits of their student id number)
    • The Non-credit Student Sakai logon instructions

Online Sakai courses

Online instructors are required to perform all of the steps above, except the Required Sakai Hybrid/Supplemental Instructor Preparation. Online instructors don't meet with their students, therefore they can't share in a classroom the required information online students need to logon to Sakai: student id, Durham Tech userid or Student Sakai logon instructions.

For online, non-credit courses, we recommend the following is completed as well, before the course start date:

5. For large non-credit online Sakai class sections, (50+ students), we recommend that department supervisors and administrative assistants complete the Communications Management Basics workshop, a Colleague workshop offered by IT (this month, Feb 12 and Feb 23, 2018). Why? a. Your supervisors and administrative assistants must provide non-credit online Sakai students with their Durham Tech id (student id), as their student id is part of their Durham Tech/Sakai userid b. Using Communications Management, if you have valid student first and last names, valid student email addresses, and students have been assigned Colleague student ids, you can set up an email you can then send to your students with the information they need to figure out their Durham Tech/Sakai userid, set up/activate their Durham Tech/Sakai password, and logon to Sakai c. Remember: All Durham Tech userid’s are made up of a student’s last name, first name (first initial), and the last 4 digits of their student id. d. Plus, don’t forget, to set up/activate Durham Tech/Sakai passwords, students’ Colleague records must contain their latest zip code, correct birthdate, and for some students, the last 4 digits of their social security number. e. If large, online, non-credit courses are comprised of students whose Colleague records were created more than a year ago. It’s highly recommended that supervisors and administrative assistants work with the student’s managers and/or students: i. To make sure that the students’ Colleague records contain their current email addresses, so their required id, password and logon information can be sent to them. ii. Also, the Colleague student information should be current, so students can set up their passwords (their zip code, birth date, social security number)

How to Resolve Student logon Issues

  • Students must enter the following Colleague student information to set up their Durham Tech/Sakai password:
    • Five digit zip code
    • Birth date
    • In some cases, the last four digits of their social security number
  • If any of a students' information listed above is incorrect, they will receive an error message of "501S", "502Z", or "503B"
    • IMPORTANT: Instructors/supervisors must work with their program specialists to update student records with their current data. Otherwise, your students will not be able to reset their Sakai password and logon to their Sakai class.
    • Here is a list of Program Specialists who should be contacted to correct student data
  • If a student receives an error message of "505A", the student/instructor or supervisor should email sakaihelp@durhamtech.edu, with the following information to get the issue resolved:
    • student name
    • student id number
    • student email address
