Hybrid or Supplemental courses

If you are providing a hybrid course or a course that uses Sakai to provide supplemental course materials, the following tasks must be performed before students can participate in the course:

Required Sakai Training

  • Supervisors and instructors must register for and successfully complete the required workshop: Intro to Sakai – Online!
    • If the instructor is teaching a hybrid or online course, we highly recommend supervisors and instructors also register for and complete the workshop: Intermediate Sakai – Online!

Required Colleague Section Creation

  • Just like any other course, the appropriate personnel must add the class section in Colleague, and Sakai-trained instructors must be assigned to the Colleague section
  • After the Colleague section has been created, the supervisor or appropriate personnel must complete this form for each Colleague section: Sakai Course Site Request for Non-Credit Courses
    • A confirmation email will be sent to the requester. Within 1-2 days, the Sakai non-credit course will be created, and students automatically enrolled. If instructors have completed Sakai training, they will automatically be enrolled in the course site as well.

Required Instructor Preparation

  • For face-to-face and hybrid classes, instructors must provide students with the following required information:
    • Student Seven digit Durham Tech student id
    • Student Durham Tech/Sakai userid (made up of their last name, first initial of their first name and last four digits of their student id number)
    • Non-credit Student Sakai logon instructions
    • Note: Students must enter the following Colleague student information to set up their Durham Tech/Sakai password.
      • Five digit zip code
      • Birth date
      • In some cases, the last four digits of their social security number
    • If a student's Colleague record was created or last updated more than a year ago, we recommend instructors or supervisors work with their administrative assistants to update student records with their current data.

For large, online, non-credit courses, we recommend the following is completed as well, before the course start date:

5. For large non-credit online Sakai class sections, (50+ students), we recommend that department supervisors and administrative assistants complete the Communications Management Basics workshop, a Colleague workshop offered by IT (this month, Feb 12 and Feb 23, 2018). Why? a. Your supervisors and administrative assistants must provide non-credit online Sakai students with their Durham Tech id (student id), as their student id is part of their Durham Tech/Sakai userid b. Using Communications Management, if you have valid student first and last names, valid student email addresses, and students have been assigned Colleague student ids, you can set up an email you can then send to your students with the information they need to figure out their Durham Tech/Sakai userid, set up/activate their Durham Tech/Sakai password, and logon to Sakai c. Remember: All Durham Tech userid’s are made up of a student’s last name, first name (first initial), and the last 4 digits of their student id. d. Plus, don’t forget, to set up/activate Durham Tech/Sakai passwords, students’ Colleague records must contain their latest zip code, correct birthdate, and for some students, the last 4 digits of their social security number. e. If large, online, non-credit courses are comprised of students whose Colleague records were created more than a year ago. It’s highly recommended that supervisors and administrative assistants work with the student’s managers and/or students: i. To make sure that the students’ Colleague records contain their current email addresses, so their required id, password and logon information can be sent to them. ii. Also, the Colleague student information should be current, so students can set up their passwords (their zip code, birth date, social security number)
