Importing (Copying) One Assessment to Another Course
As a best practice, it is recommended that you import tests & quizzes (and other course content) using Site Info > Import from Site (see handout Importing Course Content [PDF] for details).
- If you need to import only one assessment, the method you use will depend on whether your test contains images.
METHOD 1: If your test contains images
- You must save the images in a public folder, follow the instructions below (otherwise, your images will not display):
- Using Images in Test Questions (PDF)
- Then perform STEPS 1 and 2 below.

- If you've already imported a test with images, you'll need to perform additional steps
- Contact sakaihelp@durhamtech.edu to make sure your students can see images in your test.
An easy way to copy a test from one Sakai site to another is to export it from one course and import it into the other. To do this:
STEP 1: To export an assessment for use in another Sakai site:
- Go into the Sakai site that contains the test you want to copy.
- On the course menu, click on Tests & Quizzes.
- Click the Actions drop-down beside the MASTER version of the test you want to copy; click EXPORT.
- Choose export type: Content Packaging
- Click EXPORT to save the exported test file to your local computer. Be sure to note the name of the exported file (it is often titled "exportAssessment.zip")and note the location where you are saving the file.
- Click the Actions drop-down beside the MASTER version of the test you want to copy; click EXPORT.
STEP 2: To import an assessment that was exported from Sakai:
- Go into the Sakai site where you want to copy/import the test.
- On the course menu, click on Tests & Quizzes. At top, click on the Add tab; then click on IMPORT (in the area to the right of the "Create from Scratch" section).
- Click Browse or Choose to locate and select the file that you exported above.
- Use the default choice "Export from this (or other Sakai) system"
- Click IMPORT. After a few seconds of processing, the test will appear as a MASTER.
- Click Browse or Choose to locate and select the file that you exported above.
